The Challenge
Stonehurst is a 29 apartment leasehold housing scheme comprising two floors and was constructed in 1984. There is also an older section to the property to which the later construction has been added. Our instruction was to survey all the communal areas for lighting upgrade covering Reception, Corridors, Stairs and the Plant/Electric Rooms.
The original lighting to the corridors generally comprised of surface 600mm square 4 x lamp fittings c/w opal diffuser with the combined emergency fittings using 1 x lamp. The ground floor had a steel panel suspended ceiling with the second floor having a plasterboard ceiling. We were advised that the suspended ceiling was also to be renewed.
The emergency lighting system was based on a 24vdc 384watt central battery system, the battery unit being situated in the electric room to the ground floor. This system was to be removed and replacement fittings installed complete with integral battery packs.
On our inspection we discovered that there was no emergency lighting to the stairwells or externally to the final exits.
The Solution
To upgrade all luminaires fitted with the latest LED technology, incorporating dimmable occupancy control for improved energy efficiency.
To replace the existing steel suspended ceiling with a 1200x600 grid ceiling system. To supply and install all suspended ceilings and amend the fixed wiring accordingly.
This scheme did not meet the requirements for emergency lighting and additional emergency luminaires were installed making the site compliant.
Johnnie Johnson Housing use the Morgan Hope dimmable lighting system with the MicroMac integral occupancy detection, these luminaires use high quality branded components and are designed for a maintenance free installation. On completion we commissioned the site ensuring that all occupancy sensors were set to the desired parameters.
